Young Modern- Album Review

  • Apr 4, 2017

So in amongst all of my reviews so far, I thought I would include some album reviews. I'm kicking off this one wit

h an album that has been around for 10 years and in that time I have heard it over and over. This is Young Modern by Silverchair.

I'm sure when you all think of Silverchair, the song Straight Lines will appear in your head immediately (either that or Tomorrow). I'd like to address that Straight Lines is not my favourite song and this album is also not one of my favourites. In fact, I don't like it at all.

I applaud musicians on their artistic approaches and their abilities in changing from one genre to another but there are times when that doesn't always work. Frogstomp was Silverchair's career defining album, Freakshow was a peak album in the age of ever-decreasing grunge music in a post Kurt Cobain society, Neon Ballroom was a genre-changing, heart breaking breakthrough, Diorama was yet another genre-changing album with features orchestras and recovery and finally, Young Modern...genre-changing, non-responsive and avant-garde.

Naturally this album wasn't going to be anything like their previous 4, it was not going to showcase their roots and Daniel Johns was most certainly not acknowledging his journey through the music shifts and what originally brought himself, Chris Joannou and Ben Gillies to the public eye. There are times when predictability is welcome and where the element of surprise is too, however I found this album to be somewhat a rude awakening. I am always open minded to music, especially when it comes to the rest of the discography by artists I like, but to say the least, I wasn't pleased. Straight Lines was a boring song and I quickly tired of it. Nowadays, I may catch myself singing it but there's still a pang of dislike in the air.

This was awarded an ARIA which is an amazing achievement and I applaud the boys but I can't help but feel there was something more deserving to take its place. Perhaps it was unknown at the time or just not as critically received.

By all means, if you want to listen to this, go ahead. This is merely my opinion but I have spoken to countless others who have agreed with me. Young Modern is an acquired taste and depends on your mood, patience levels and obviously your music taste.

If you don't listen to this album, you aren't cheating the system. There really isn't much you'll miss so instead, please take the time to listen to their other CDs from immediate studio albums or Best Of/ Rarities.

*If you guys have any albums, movies or brands that you would like me to review, please message me through my 'contact' menu and I'll will be more than happy to take a look for you. *
