Superbad- Review
I don't even know where to begin. Again, I'm left disappointed and unsatisfied with a film that was 'guaranteed to be funny.' Just like the title, Superbad is really super, fucking bad. There were positive reviews everywhere about this film being hilarious with the assurance of tickling even the most rigid audience member's funny bone. I've come to the conclusion that IMDb reviews are probably rigged, because in no way was this movie funny at all. I also have to say that it is so grossly overrated. There's a lot I didn't like about this film and I'll most certainly be diving into that later.
Once again, American cinema dives back to that typical teen genre of horny high school seniors wanting to achieve all their sexual fantasies before heading to college, with two girls in mind. One is crass, the other is socially awkward and together they have an inseparable friendship that will be put to the test.
God forbid that two American teenagers are still teenage virgins...but it all makes sense once you take a look at their character descriptions. The performances were horrendous and like I said before, weren't funny in the slightest. If you read my review for Youth In Revolt, you'll understand my strong dislike for Michael Cera. I knew he was in this film and yet still put myself through the torture of having to endure his shitty performance with his stereotypical geek awkwardness and whiny voice. Once again, he goes back to the role of an unpopular and quaint teenager. It's as if that's all he knows and I think if he were to step outside of that role for one second, we'd all have a bloody heart attack from shock. Don't be looking into his character too deeply for a flicker of comedy because I'm not sure he even understands what comedy is.
Jonah Hill...I think when most people think of him, they refer back to this film. That's quite unfortunate considering that this film really shouldn't be any point of reference. Sure, he was the only cast member to really have the floor but wasted all of his opportunities for something that could've been funny. He was vulgar, easily unlikeable and uncomfortable to watch. That was essentially everything his role was meant to be, yet he did absolutely nothing with it to make it funny.
If we're going to mention Christopher Mintz-Plasse, the only thing worth bringing up is the 'McLovin' part. Otherwise, his character was just plain annoying and didn't offer anything of importance to the plot. I will say this though, the McLovin thing does get boring after awhile and repeated exposure to this film dries the concept out very quickly. That was literally the only moment where a minor exhale of air escaped my nose.
I do have a sense of humour and I don't mind movies that are for easy viewing and don't really require a critique as they're just a source of light entertainment, but this wasn't even good. There wasn't a single place in this film where I thought, "this is okay."
So there you have it. Another review solely with the purpose to complain about a film that I lost interest in quicker than the time it took me to turn the TV on anyway. I'm sure some of you will sit down and watch this film and think "I feel like I've seen this before." It bewilders me how overhyped this film is because there's no substance to be found.
Score: 3.5/10.
