Album of the Week
This week I present to you Frozen by Curve. If you're fan of dream pop and alternative rock, this is definitely for you. Featuring a badass female lead singer and the most zen sounds that money can buy. Plus it's a real rarity too.
This album was released in 1991 and like many other bands that were around in that time and of particular genre such as My Bloody Valentine, Lush and Mazzy Star; you'll notice some significant similarities. If you're a fan of either of these listed bands then the answer is yes, you will like Curve very much. I'm not even sure how I discovered Curve in all honesty. Again, I was skimming youtube and saw this song was recommended for me after I had listed to The Stone Roses. I made the right choice by clicking on it. If they had caught me on a day where I was really busy, I may not have had the luxury of discovering them. It's very hard to with Curve as well. They are so carefully hidden that not even a Facebook page linked to Wiki can be found (you think you've found it and then it redirects you to another band called Curve from America). Aside from Mazzy Star's Fade Into You, Curve were really the only dream pop band I had listened to and are always a go-to for when I need to chill out or go to sleep.
The best part? Curve and Garbage reference each other as influences, so again, if you like Garbage you will appreciate Curve.
This is actually an EP with a running time of 16 minutes and 22 seconds but every track is pure bliss. Cliché or not, Coast Is Clear is my favourite track on this EP because Toni Halliday's voice is literally kicking and it accompanies the music so well. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the creativeness and construction of this EP. I've been into every record store in Perth trying to find this, whether it's on vinyl or CD and always turns up with nothing. Fortunately eBay have been known to stock a few through their online international sellers from the UK (where the band originate from).
If any of you message me and tell me you had heard of Curve prior to this, I will drop down dead. They are such a rare luxury to have in the music industry and have given the world of dream pop something to admire.
Anyway, if you're going to give this little gem a listen, you'll most likely have to do it by eBay but if you enjoy this and want to find the vinyl/ CD, go and get it! I need to have it in my record collection. I'd recommend this to anyone, regardless of whether you listen to dream pop or not, you'll just fall in love with all of the beauty. These guys aren't active anymore and haven't been since 2005 but can you imagine the scene they had in the 90s? It would have been so epic.
