Album of the Week
A day late, yes I know. Anyway, this week I would like to present a band that has already been featured here but with a different album. This is Faith No More with their album 'Album of the Year.'
Released in 1997, this album was received as the final bow from Faith No More as they entered a 13 year hiatus before returning to stage and another 5 years on top of that for the release of their 5th album, Sol Invictus.
The overall genre of this album has been labelled as alternative metal but also contains some relaxing lounge influenced songs that are literal masterpieces. With that being said, I'm astounded with the ratings it was given, particularly that 2.4/ 10 from Pitchfork. That's just too low of a score for me with an album like this. Yes, it may only appeal to some but they should at least be given credit for the hidden beauties and 3 singles from this album. This was pretty much what happened with their album Angel Dust, they were warned against the release for 'commercial suicide' and yet it became such a brilliant album and ended up changing the opinions of many critics.
Ultimately after releasing the album and receiving the negative lash, Faith No More split because in the words of Bill Gould (bassist and co-founder of the band) they were "beginning to make bad music." That just seems so impossible for a band like them but perhaps if they didn't split, they could have made some bad music.
Anyway, give this one a try and please tell me as I'd love to hear what you think about it/ whether you agree with the critics or not.
