Black Mirror: Nosedive- Episode Review

Just taking some time out of the series to specifically review this episode of Black Mirror. I'm not so much going to be talking about the performances, but rather everything that I got out of it. This episode had the most appeal to me and like every episode of Black Mirror, was hauntingly relevant in the way they present a neutral to negative look on technology and the possible future it has for society.

Nosedive is episode 1 of season 3 and follows the story of Lacie, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, a woman obsessed with keeping up her ratings (in a society where ratings are the be-all and end-all of life and determine your social status) and being accepted among those who are above 4.8, the upper class.

I don't believe I have ever seen something so aesthetically pleasing. I love Lacie's pastel outfits, matching accessories and settings so physically, this episode really grabbed my attention. From the overall design, it looked like a mini-universe or a dollhouse and I found it to be so unique and pretty.

As always, Black Mirror delivers the harsh realities of technology and its general impact. For this episode, the ratings were the error. These particular ratings could be linked to how many likes we get on Facebook, instagram and also the general rating system of feedback from businesses and Uber. It's scary to think that people count their likes/ ratings to see where they stand, how well liked they are and whether or not that determines the way other people view them.

There were also a lot of examples throughout this episode of how people become hungry for likes/ ratings. One example in particular was a scene where Lacie bites into a cookie and then takes a photo of it on her plate with a cliché caption, which manages to get an abundance of likes. I'm sure most people are guilty of this, but it just further proves how in tap this show really is of capturing the current way our society works, whether we have the exact same technology or not, we're still headed in the same direction.

If anything, this is more probably appreciation to the show rather than a full review, but I give it nothing but the very best compliments and a full 10/10 rating because it is just so brilliant. My full review of the entire Black Mirror series will be up soon, so if you're thinking of watching this show, do so immediately. I guarantee that it will change your perspective in the most relevant and appealing way as possible.

Score: 10/10
