Degrassi: Next Class Season 4- Review

I'm starting to seriously think that I have my head under a rock because I had no clue until the other day that a new season of Degrassi was being released. Netflix said that it would be released on July 7th but I went back and checked and it hadn't been updated, so I found it on youtube.

Degrassi has been a huge part of my growing up and I distinctively remember tuning in each night when I was 5+ years old so catch a look at "The Next Generation." After a little bit of silence from this show, I was happy to see that it would be returning.

Also, the way these episodes/ seasons work are a little different from what we're used to. Originally the franchise broke it down into Degrassi Junior High, Degrassi High, Degrassi The Next Generation (2001-2015) and Degrassi Next Class (2016-).

The performances: Obviously like many TV series', there are many different characters so I won't go into detail of every single performance. My favourite character in this class is Zig (played by Ricardo Hoyos). He's cute, he's interesting and I've seen a lot of character progression from his first episode in Season 11. I like his style changes and the way he fits into certain aspects of different episode plots. Like many actors/ actresses in this how, some exaggerated acting does take place and sometimes it's so bad that it's funny but I didn't see much of it in this season and was very impressed by it.

Another character who deserves to be mentioned here is Yael (played by Jamie Bloch). Her appearances began in Season 15 and since that point has become increasingly important to other issues explored within this show. I never really found her to be that interesting or noticeable but in this season she really was and her character was so significant as a voice for many real-life problems faced continuously today. She really did a good job on her acting and was definitely a more memorable role.

The cons: I'll repeat again, just some exaggerated acting here and there but not a constant occurrence. Also, I'm not sure whether it is the acting or not but Esme (played by Chelsea Clark) really gives me the shits. I hate her. Every time I see her appear it drives me insane. I really am at a loss for whether it is her acting or whether that's the way she's supposed to be as a character but I feel like this show really would benefit without her. It just makes me physically drained seeing her.

I found this season also to be a little too short. Some things just didn't feel resolved or skipped over too quickly. If the creators leave it as is, I will throw my computer and give up on this show forever.

Despite it being a teen series, it is entertaining and I will continue watching it, regardless of what anyone says. If you grow up with it, usually it has some kind of an attachment to you. Not a bad season at all but they really can't leave it where they did. There had better be another season or two.

Score: 7/10.
