GLOW: Season 1- Review

I haven't been too overly impressed with some of Netflix's Original releases but this was definitely a change from their usual material that was more appealing to me. G.L.O.W (gorgeous ladies of wrestling) is a pumped up, electrifying and girl-power driven show set in the 1980s and follows the lives of 15 women with a clueless attitude towards wrestling.

This comedy-drama was influenced by a real life women's wrestling circuit (also entitled GLOW) and followed on with a 'what if' storyline of success.

Funny, dramatic and at times, downright offensive, this show provides a look at criticism of women's sports, sexuality and the nitty gritty of low-rent show politics.

For the most part, it was entertaining and really shed a light on breaking 'taboos' and shutting down the oppressive opinions of males with hungry eyes but I felt that a lot of this show was revealed through it's trailer and did shy away from the original documentary about the real women of GLOW and the original TV series from 1985. From underneath highly positive reviews praising this show for it's amazing use of costume, makeup and soundtrack (among many other tasteful feats), it has received backlash for a slow plot, predictability and poor character building. I can back up two of these statements: I really didn't feel quite engaged with the show until it neared the ending, particularly the final episode. It's no lie that I was expecting more from this show and I wasn't exactly given that. I also can't get behind the rating of 96% by Rotten Tomatoes. Poor character building was where I felt let the show down the most, characters such as Ruth (played by Alison Brie) were at times hard to swallow and almost made me reconsider my viewing choices. I wanted to like each and every character very much but the whining and moaning of Ruth every five seconds became too much for my extra-sensory self. She did eventually turn herself around, but it became too late as this too neared the ending.

Personally, I don't believe this series should be revived for a second season because what more could they possibly add? This seemed more of a show that kept to the original concept of GLOW but instead showed more of a behind-the-scenes perspective. There has been speculation of another season but I don't feel as though it would be beneficial. This show could also be a give or take situation as the genre and concept of this may not be for everyone but if you're in the mood for an action-packed adventure filled with some strong personalities and stronger moves, get your spandex on and backcomb your hair for a new take on the gorgeous ladies of wrestling.

Score: 6/10.
