Pretty Little Liars: Season 1- Review
It's pretty evident that I caved. Had I not been so curious, I wouldn't have bothered with this show at all but remembering distinctive conversations from girls in high school raving about this show sparked this curiosity. Pretty Little Liars is a dark, oddly addictive and intriguing television show that follows the lives of four girls and their "life after death" experience following the murder of someone close to them.
Fuelled by anonymous and abusive messages, just how far will these girls go to uncover the mystery eating away at their town and will it be enough to protect their loved ones?
At first, I wasn't sure what to expect with this show. I assumed it was going to be a crummy, hot mess of a drama but this season proved to be more than just that. It definitely appeals to an audience, but I wouldn't say it's for everyone. Particularly not a large male oriented audience as the roles of the four female protagonists aren't always relatable (even from a female perspective). There are also a lot of stereotypes within the show on a characterisation level, but it still proves to be an entertaining contribution to evening television.
I will say that it isn't as creepy as I expected. The score kind of gives that away. The girls that once raved about this show used to say that it was very creepy and frightening but it really isn't and I find that to be a bit of a downfall when it has been labelled as a thriller.
The entire show is redeemed for seven seasons, however I have heard that as the seasons progressed there was a lower level of interest and viewers per millions dwindled. Like every story, you can't keep dragging on the same problem and never having a solution or some kind of appropriately timed ending, otherwise it loses narrative. By this time next week I'll have probably made my way into season 3 so I'm hoping that it won't lose its appeal prematurely.
For the most part, this show is worthy enough of being considered while wrapped in a blanket and sipping a glass of tea. Watch it at night if you wish because if anything, you'll find it more entertaining in a drama sense than a spooky addition.
Score: 6/10.
