Hinterland: Season One- Review

Hinterland is a well-constructed, grisly and emotionally haunting Welsh crime drama that leaves a lasting impression on its audience. The show centres around DCI Tom Mathias and his team of investigators: Detective Inspector Mared Rhys, Detective Constable Lloyd Elis and Detective Sergeant Siân Owen.

In amongst dealing with homicides in the Welsh rural locations of Aberystwyth, DCI Tom Mathias deals with his own personal demons, sometimes interlocking with the crimes of others and the tampering of evidence.

This show is a beautiful whirlwind, entwining the dark and gloomy landscapes of hilly Wales with the perfect dialogue and research that every crime show should contain. It's hard to explain just how I felt when watching this show. I was aware of a sadness about particular characters, something missing from their lives but crafted to subtle that it could go unnoticed by the untrained eye.

It becomes very important to me as an audience member, when a show or film becomes personal. In the first episode, I was already noticing a feeling of familiarity of an emptier and lost time. While it saddened me, it was beautiful to know that this tv show had that ability to make me feel something.

The acting was fantastic and I was very pleased with how reasonable and accurate the portrayals of each character was. For someone within a homicide bureau, they aren't going to have a cheery persona about them. It's business. This is a difference I've seen through this show in comparison to others.

On the Australian Netflix, the episodes run for roughly one hour and thirty six minutes (as they combine both parts into one episode, rather than splitting them up as noted in the British Netflix) and span over two seasons. Unfortunately, a third season exists but not on Australia's Netflix.

It is also bilingual, meaning that two versions of this show exist. One in Welsh language and the other in English language. There are also references to this made in the English version, but subtitles are present for your need.

I highly recommend this show to lovers of crime drama, particularly those that enjoy the nitty gritty of forensics and crime solving.

Featuring: Richard Harrington, Mali Harries, Alex Harries & Hannah Daniel.

Score: 10/10.
