Red Dragon- Review
Based off the book going by the same name (written by Thomas Harris), Red Dragon is a horrifically seductive film that investigates the lives of Dr Hannibal Lecter and FBI Agent Will Graham pre- Silence of the Lambs. Brett Ratner's dark masterpiece once again restores Sir Anthony Hopkins and introduces Edward Norton.
An empath and FBI Agent, Will Graham renews his work after originally handing in the towel, to seek a crafty serial killer tormenting families and taking unusual trophies. In an unorthodox turn of events, Dr Hannibal Lecter proves to aid the investigation as a powerful source for knowledge.
What more can I say about Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Hannibal? It was as if the role was written just for him. There's no one else I could possibly see taking this role and investing as much time to create the same outcome. What's more is that Anthony doesn't need to be busting at his strait jacket seams to be terrifying, which is what adds to the psychological value of this film. He is a true genius and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance.
At first I wasn't sure about Edward Norton being cast as Will Graham. My mistake was from reading critical responses to this film, a lot in which had a negative attitude towards the casting choices, Edward in particular. My uncertainty completely vanished after I got to know his character. Unlike the critics' responses, he didn't need to be gritty or super intense to play an FBI agent. No one does, unless it's a major part of the script and sure, anyone can play a cop. But there was something special about Edward and something equally as special about his character, Will. Whatever that is, I can't explain but I think he pulled it off exceptionally well.
I also really appreciated the research taken for Ralph Fiennes' role of Francis Dolarhyde, a tortured and socially awkward man with brutal ambition. His role was based loosely on the "BTK" (Bind, Torture, Kill) killer Dennis Raider. Ralph was exceptional too in his role, as he is in many other films that he has been critically acclaimed for. He really had the ability to pull from all corners of Dolarhyde to form one smooth and chilling performance.
For those who don't know, Silence of the Lambs is my favourite film. Ever. And while I wasn't avidly keen on 'Hannibal', I wasn't sure what to expect with this film but upon watching this film, I found it to be a pleasurable experience.
Red Dragon is a cleverly constructed, thought-provoking film that adheres to engaging its audience and tickles the mind through powerful performances and a brilliant plot.
Score: 10/10.
