Game Night- Review

While it's unlikely that this film will create roars of laughter amongst ALL of their audience members, Game Night proves to at least be an enjoyable and mildly comical twist. Directed by John Frances Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, it stars Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams.

Five friends join each other for their weekly game night, each readily prepared with their competitive streak and their hunger for a win. When an unexpected guest arrives, game night is taken up a notch in a comically dark series of events.

This time around, I won't single out actors based on their performances. Realistically, I found the characters all to resonate with regular, real-life people without any special talents or highly driven IQ's that make one stand out more than the other. That doesn't take anything away from their actual acting but it wasn't anything special either. Each character did have their own unique identity, traits and an opportunity to make the audience laugh which was well crafted but it didn't go that extra mile to become anything more than...average.

The ideas used within this film, references, impersonations and any given moment for humour were all fine and I liked the concept but this film is far from a masterpiece. It is very creative and stylish in terms of the way gaming has been incorporated outside of the actual game-playing scenes. It goes without saying that the purpose of this film really is just for a laugh and some easy and light entertainment. Beyond that, it's average.

Yes, I did laugh and I do appreciate this film for what it is (maybe I'm just a humourless bastard at times) but I didn't find myself falling into the hysterics and at points felt like the comedy was forced.

I can't say that I'm a massive fan or will praise it endlessly, but it was genuinely amusing and is worth at least taking a look at.

Score: 7/10.
