Youth In Revolt- Review

Another textbook example of easy entertainment (of sorts) that barely garners a second though, I found myself so incredibly bored with this film and so amazed at myself for the patience I put into viewing just so I could capture a glimpse of greatness that this film is supposed to have. In answer to that, I saw no glimpse of anything except for the same old plot and characters that we're used to. But as per usual, I'll touch on all of my issues with this film a little bit later.

Nick Twisp can't stand to see others around him falling in love or flaunting their lust. Just as he comes to terms with the thought that he has no life, the quaint and beautiful Sheeni emerges from shrubs of a trailer park and sends his life spiralling into a series of misdemeanours and random shenanigans for one end goal: love.

I have no shame in saying this, I really despise Michael Cera. I'm not sure whether this is because he is actually boring as a person or rather because every director he stumbles into wants him to play a socially awkward and geeky dweeb. Either way, his performance wasn't comical and made me constantly roll my eyes at the fact that I was yet again reliving the same character profile that fits every teen rom-com. But guess what? Oh yes, we get to see Michael Cera play two different roles. What's better than one drab Cera? ANOTHER ONE. He didn't even engage with his alter-ego as he should have done. He just awkwardly stared into the void where each edit would have taken place. You get some pretty believable performances from time to time, but this is not one of them.

I don't believe anyone else in this film is worth talking about. Not one performance here was remotely entertaining. I mean for a romantic interest, you'd think that Sheeni (played by Portia Doubleday) would have a little more brood and substance to her, but here we are again, disappointed as ever.

This movie wasn't a travesty, but I didn't enjoy it. I wanted a likeable cast that would prove to make the movie entertaining for it's entirety and maybe even add a bit of quirk to it but it was nothing more than an explosion-filled, sex joke making fluff of nonsense. It's the same generic plot of 16 year olds thinking their life is over because they haven't yet found a mate, never mind the fact that they have the rest of their adult lives. It's just such a random film with barely any relevance to anything within. I've seen a lot of positive reviews which is quite disappointing because I actually thought this was going to be a good film.

If you're the kind of person that likes cheap mischief made by teenagers, a predictable love story and otherwise predictable plot with a fair amount of messiness on a rainy afternoon, look no further than this film. Perhaps you'll enjoy it. Maybe.

Score: 4/10.
